Google Nest thermostat review UK: still £219, but Google stopped building for Europe

An air source heat pump outside a UK home

Quick answer: The Nest Learning Thermostat is still £219 on the Google Store UK and the Thermostat E is £199. We wouldn’t buy either. In April 2025 Google confirmed it will not launch new Nest thermostats in Europe, and older models lost app support on 25 October 2025.

We haven’t tested these units. This is based on Google’s public statements, press coverage of them and current Google Store UK listings, checked on 27 July 2026.

What Google announced

In April 2025 Google said it would stop launching new Nest thermostats in Europe, including the 4th generation it had announced the year before. It would keep selling the 3rd generation Learning Thermostat (2015) and the Nest Thermostat E (2018) while current supplies last, both still getting security updates and app control. Beyond that, Google would back other manufacturers through the Google Home APIs.

Google’s stated reason was the variety of European heating systems: they “are unique and have a variety of hardware and software requirements that make it challenging to build for the diverse set of homes” (9to5Google, 25 April 2025). That’s a reasonable engineering position. It’s also a clear signal about where the product line is going.

Alongside it, Google confirmed that three older models stopped receiving software updates on 25 October 2025: the 1st generation Learning Thermostat (2011), the 2nd generation (2012) and the 2014 European 2nd generation. Owners keep a working thermostat on the wall. They lose remote control through the Nest and Google Home apps. Check your own model against Google’s support pages before you assume which one you have.

Why that matters even if your unit is newer

A 3rd generation Learning Thermostat bought today is a 2015 design. Google has now demonstrated, with dates, that it will end app support for Nest thermostats when it decides the hardware is old enough. The 1st generation ran fourteen years before the cut-off. And nobody outside Google knows the 3rd generation’s number.

You’re paying £219 today, the most expensive entry price in this comparison, for that risk. tado° asks £159.99 for a range launched in the UK in November 2024 and actively developed. Hive asks £79 plus a £70 hub. Both companies still build for Britain.

What the Nest still does well

Credit where it’s due. The Learning Thermostat is the best-looking object in this category by a long way, the metal ring is nicer to use than any app, and the auto-schedule genuinely worked: it watched what you did for a week and built a programme from it, which is more than most rivals attempt even now.

The Heat Link is included, so there’s no separate hub to buy. Google recommends professional installation by a Nest Pro, who places the Heat Link correctly and wires it to the boiler. So on a straight swap onto an existing programmer, budget for the fitter too.

Note the £20 gap. The Thermostat E was always the cheaper, plainer model, and at £199 against £219 for the Learning Thermostat there’s almost no reason to choose it. If you’re set on Nest despite everything above, buy the Learning Thermostat.

What to buy instead

  • Modulating gas combi: tado° X wireless starter kit, £159.99, includes the hub, does OpenTherm, two-year warranty. Detail in our tado° review.
  • Cheapest route with a hub already fitted: Hive Thermostat Mini at £79. Detail in our Hive review.
  • Room-by-room zoning with no subscription: Drayton Wiser, kits from £195. See Drayton Wiser vs tado°.
  • Heat pump: none of them as the primary control. Read smart thermostats for heat pumps first.

Head to head against the two brands still building for the UK market, our comparison is at Hive vs Nest vs tado° and the full field is ranked in best smart thermostats UK 2026.

If you already own one

Don’t rip it out. A 3rd generation Nest still schedules, still learns and still connects. Keep it until it fails or until support ends, then replace it. But do check which generation you’ve actually got, because a unit from 2012 or a 2014 European model no longer talks to the apps at all. The model number is under the display ring.

If you’re weighing up a wider heating upgrade rather than just a control swap, our boiler guide, heat pump guide and the cost calculator are the better starting points. Method behind our figures is at how we calculate costs.

FAQs

Has Google discontinued the Nest thermostat in the UK?

Not withdrawn from sale. Google said in April 2025 that it will no longer launch new Nest thermostats in Europe and will continue selling the 3rd generation Learning Thermostat and the Thermostat E while current supplies last. Both were still listed on the Google Store UK on 27 July 2026.

Will my Nest stop working?

The 1st generation, 2nd generation and 2014 European 2nd generation Learning Thermostats stopped getting software updates on 25 October 2025 and no longer connect to the Nest or Google Home apps. They still control heating from the dial. Google has not announced an end date for 3rd generation or Thermostat E support.

Is the Nest worth £219 in 2026?

No, in our view. It’s the most expensive option here at £219, and the manufacturer has publicly stopped developing the line for Europe. A tado° X starter kit is £159.99 with the hub in the box. You keep £59 and get a two-year warranty.
