Quietest boilers in the UK: published dB figures compared

boilers-533

Quick answer: The quietest combi with a published figure is the Viessmann Vitodens 200-W at 39dB, roughly library-quiet. Among affordable combis the Worcester Bosch Greenstar 2000 (43dB) and Greenstar 4000 (from 42dB), both Quiet Mark accredited, lead. Anything under 45dB is background-hum territory, and for a boiler in a flat’s kitchen cupboard that’s the line worth holding.

Why boiler noise matters more in flats

In a detached house the boiler lives in a utility room or garage and nobody cares. In a flat it’s in the kitchen, often metres from the sofa, sometimes boxed into a bedroom cupboard because that’s where the old back boiler was. A combi also fires every time you open a hot tap, including at 11pm. So the difference between 42dB and 50dB is the difference between “background hum” and “what is that noise”, and because decibels are logarithmic, a 10dB increase is roughly a doubling of perceived loudness.

One caveat before the table. Manufacturers publish ErP sound power ratings measured under lab conditions, which isn’t the same as what you’ll hear standing next to the boiler in your kitchen. The figures are still the only fair way to compare brands, just don’t treat them as a promise. We haven’t tested these boilers — this comparison is based on published specifications and warranty terms, checked July 2026.

Ratings collated from manufacturer ErP data by EnergyGuide (checked July 2026); warranty terms from Worcester Bosch, Vaillant and Viessmann published terms, which depend on using accredited installers. One quieter figure does exist in EnergyGuide’s data: Ideal’s heat-only Logic Max Heat 12kW at 36dB. It needs a separate hot water cylinder, so it suits system-boiler homes rather than combi swaps.

Our take

If noise is your top priority and the budget stretches, the Vitodens 200-W is the pick: 39dB is three decibels clear of the best Worcester’s floor, a gap you’ll hear side by side, though it’s a step down rather than a different world. It’s also one of the few boilers with a stainless steel heat exchanger at its price point, which supports the long warranty.

For most flats, though, the Greenstar 2000 is the honest recommendation. At 43dB it carries independent Quiet Mark accreditation on a budget-tier boiler, and the money saved over the Viessmann buys years of servicing. The Greenstar 4000 splits the difference if you want a higher-spec version of the same quietness. Pick output by your hot water demand, not noise alone; our combi vs system vs regular guide explains which type your home needs, and the boiler product guide covers the basics.

Reading the figures like an installer

Two different decibel numbers float around boiler spec sheets and it pays to know which you’re looking at. Sound power is the total noise energy the appliance emits, measured for the ErP energy label, and it’s the figure in our table. Sound pressure is what a microphone picks up at a stated distance, usually one metre, and it’s always a lower number. A brochure quoting “just 36dB at one metre” isn’t necessarily quieter than a rival quoting 42dB sound power; it’s measuring a different thing. When you compare, use the ErP label figure from both, which every manufacturer must publish.

Installation choices move the real-world result as much as the model choice. A boiler screwed to a solid brick wall transmits less vibration than one on a hollow stud partition, so ask your installer about mounting if the only available wall backs onto a bedroom. Correct clearances, a properly clipped flue and copper pipework that isn’t touching the plasterboard all quiet the finished job. And ask them to set the pump speed and range-rate the output to your radiators during commissioning; a 25kW boiler turned down to match a small system runs quieter and condenses better at the same time.

If your current boiler has got louder

A boiler that has gradually become noisy usually has a system problem, not an age problem. Kettling (a rumbling, boiling-kettle sound) points to limescale or sludge on the heat exchanger, and a whooshing fan or vibrating case can be fixable parts. A £100-ish chemical flush is worth trying before you spend £2,000 on a new boiler for the silence alone. Our modelled estimate for a boiler replacement is around £2,804 installed (method at how we calculate costs), and you can localise that with the calculator.

FAQs

What decibel level counts as quiet for a boiler?

Under 45dB is quiet, under 40dB is exceptional. For context, a modern fridge runs around 40dB and normal conversation is about 60dB. Quiet Mark accreditation is a useful independent check because it tests products against their category, not a fixed number.

Are heat pumps quieter than boilers?

Indoors, yes, because the noisy part sits outside. The outdoor unit typically publishes 45 to 60dB sound power, and siting rules keep it away from windows. Several heat pumps now carry Quiet Mark accreditation too; see our heat pump brand comparison if you’re weighing the switch.

Does a quiet boiler cost more to buy?

Not necessarily. The Quiet Mark-accredited Greenstar 2000 is one of Worcester Bosch’s cheapest boilers. You pay a premium for the very quietest units like the Vitodens 200-W, but the 42 to 44dB band includes plenty of mid-priced options.
