Boiler Kettling: What That Rumbling Noise Means, What Causes It and How to Fix It

What causes kettling
Limescale
In hard water areas, dissolved calcium comes out of solution wherever water is hottest — and nowhere in your home is hotter than the boiler’s heat exchanger. A layer of scale builds up and acts as an insulating blanket: the metal behind it overheats, the thin film of water in contact with it boils where it shouldn’t, and the steam bubbles collapse violently as they hit cooler water. That collapse is the rumble you hear — the same physics as a kettle element furring up. Your water company’s website will tell you how hard the supply is at your postcode.
Sludge
The other culprit is magnetite — the black, oily iron oxide produced as radiators corrode from the inside. It circulates around the system and settles in low-flow spots, including the narrow waterways of the heat exchanger, creating the same hot spots and localised boiling as scale. Sludge usually means the corrosion inhibitor in the system water has depleted — the root cause that also needs fixing.
Other triggers
Less commonly, a faulty boiler thermostat or sensor lets the water overheat, or a circulation pump running too slowly gives water time to boil in the exchanger. An engineer will rule these out before reaching for the flushing chemicals.
Is a kettling boiler dangerous?
Modern boilers carry several layers of overheat protection, so kettling is very unlikely to be a safety emergency. The real damage is financial. Repeated thermal stress can crack the heat exchanger — typically the single most expensive part of the boiler — and the insulating layer of scale means the boiler burns more gas to deliver the same heat into your radiators. The fixes, cheapest first
- Chemical clean. An engineer adds a cleaning agent to the system water, lets it circulate for days or weeks to dissolve scale and loosen sludge, then drains, flushes and refills with fresh inhibitor. Often enough for mild, recently started kettling.

Stopping it coming back
- Have the inhibitor level checked at every annual boiler service — it depletes over time and every drain-down.
- Fit a magnetic filter if the system doesn’t already have one.
- In hard water areas, ask your installer about a scale reducer on the cold feed — and if a new boiler is ever fitted, make sure the old system is properly flushed first, or the sludge simply attacks the new heat exchanger.
- Deal with kettling promptly: the longer scale bakes on, the more likely you need the expensive end of the fix list.

Will a power flush definitely cure kettling?
Usually, if the cause is sludge or loose scale in the system. Scale bonded hard inside the heat exchanger itself sometimes needs a targeted descaling treatment, and a badly scaled or cracked exchanger can only be replaced. A good engineer will set expectations before starting.
How do I know if I’m in a hard water area?
Check your water supplier’s website — all of them publish hardness by postcode. A quicker clue: if your kettle furs up within a few months, your heat exchanger is seeing the same water.
Can I just ignore kettling?
