Quick answer: The IQ Battery 5P is a 5kWh AC-coupled unit with six microinverters built in, 3.84kW of continuous output and the longest warranty in the mainstream market: 15 years or 6,000 cycles. At about £2,880 including VAT per battery before installation, it makes most sense inside an Enphase microinverter system, and much less outside one.

What is the IQ Battery 5P?

Enphase built its name on microinverters, and the 5P is that philosophy applied to storage. Each unit is a self-contained AC battery with six grid-forming IQ8D-BAT microinverters inside, per Enphase’s UK product page. There’s no single big inverter to fail; the cells are LFP, cooling is passive and there are no moving parts, according to the retailer datasheet summary.

Capacity comes in 5kWh blocks. Need more? Add units. It’s the opposite philosophy to one big 13.5kWh box.

What does AC coupling cost you?

Solar electricity heading into a 5P takes the long road: DC from the panel, to AC via the panel’s microinverter, back to DC for the cells, then out as AC again when you use it. The flip side is flexibility. AC coupling makes the 5P one of the easiest batteries to retrofit, because your existing solar system stays exactly as it is. No inverter swap, no rewiring the array. Does the ecosystem argument stack up?

If your roof already runs Enphase IQ8 microinverters, the 5P slots into the same app and control system, and Solar4Good’s review notes the IQ System Controller enables whole-home backup with Sunlight Backup keeping panels generating during an outage. That’s a genuinely tidy package.

Outside an Enphase system, the case mostly collapses: you’d be paying a premium for ecosystem integration you don’t have. Cheaper AC-coupled and hybrid options exist for everyone else.

UK price reality

Solar Trade Sales lists the battery-only unit at £2,878.88 including VAT (£2,399.07 ex VAT), checked August 2026. That’s roughly £576 per usable kWh for hardware alone, which is more than a 13kWh Sigenergy SigenStor costs per kWh fully installed (£6,995, about £538/kWh, per Heatable). Stack three 5Ps for 15kWh and you’re at £8,600 of hardware before labour or the System Controller.

The 0% VAT window on battery installations (until 31 March 2027) softens the installed price, and the 15-year warranty means you can spread the cost over a longer guaranteed life than any rival offers. For scale: a Powerwall 3 at £7,395 to £8,995 installed works out at £547 to £666 per kWh, so a multi-unit Enphase system tends to land above Tesla money once fitted. It’s the expensive way to buy kilowatt-hours, bought for reasons other than price.

Who should buy it, and who shouldn’t?

Buy it if you have Enphase microinverters, modest storage needs and you value warranty length over headline capacity. One or two units cover most evening loads, and 6,000 warranted cycles at one cycle a day is over 16 years of daily use. Enphase itself is a listed US company and was trading normally when we checked in August 2026.

A quick sizing sanity check: two units give you 10kWh. A typical UK home that shifts its evening and overnight load onto stored solar or off-peak charge will use most of that daily, so two 5Ps is a sensible ceiling for many households. The passive, fanless design also makes it one of the few batteries you’d happily mount inside near living space, since there’s no cooling noise to live with.

FAQs

How many IQ Battery 5P units can you stack?

Multiple units combine into larger banks; Solar4Good puts the theoretical ceiling around 60kWh. In practice UK homes rarely go beyond two or three units, because the per-kWh price climbs fast.

Does the 5P work in a power cut?

Yes, when installed with the IQ System Controller, which handles the switch to backup power. Without it, the battery shuts down in an outage like any grid-tied system. It’s an extra cost, so ask for it as a line item on your quote.

Is the 15-year warranty really the longest?

Of the mainstream brands we’ve reviewed, yes: 15 years or 6,000 cycles against 12 years for Fox ESS and 10 for Tesla and Sigenergy. Check the capacity-retention figure in the warranty document all the same; length isn’t the only term that matters.
