What is the Great British Insulation Scheme?

Plain-English definition · Updated September 2026

Definition: The Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) funded single insulation measures for a broad band of UK households. It closed on 31 March 2026.

How it differed from ECO4

GBIS funded one measure at a time (typically cavity wall or loft insulation) with wider eligibility than ECO4, including many households not on benefits.

Current alternative

ECO4 still funds insulation for eligible low-income households in England, Scotland and Wales until 31 December 2026. In England, councils run the Warm Homes: Local Grant for homes rated EPC D to G where the household has a gross income under £36,000, gets a means-tested benefit or lives in an eligible postcode; Scotland has the Home Energy Scotland grant and loan, Wales has Nest (means-tested) and Northern Ireland has the Affordable Warmth scheme (household income under £23,000). Professionally installed insulation also carries 0% VAT until 31 March 2027 (then 5%).
