What is a Solar Inverter?

Plain-English definition · Updated June 2026

Definition: A solar inverter converts the DC electricity solar panels produce into the AC electricity your home and the grid use. It’s the hardest-working component of a solar system.

Types

String inverters (one box, £800-£1,500) suit simple unshaded roofs. Microinverters or power optimisers (per-panel) cost more but handle shading and complex roofs better.

Lifespan

Inverters typically last 10-15 years — expect one replacement during a solar system’s 25-year life. Check the warranty: 10 years is good, 12+ is excellent.
