Tethered vs Untethered EV Chargers: Pros, Cons, Costs and Cable Theft

Quick answer: A tethered charger has its cable permanently attached — pull it off the holster, plug in, done. An untethered (socketed) charger is a neater box that takes your own Type 2 cable, typically around £99 for a 5-metre lead. Most daily drivers end up happier with tethered; untethered wins on looks, flexibility and future-proofing.

The difference in 30 seconds

Every home chargepoint does the same electrical job. The tethered/untethered choice is purely about the cable. Tethered units come with a fixed cable (usually 5m, with longer options at ordering) that lives wrapped around the unit. Untethered units have just a Type 2 socket: you plug your own cable in each time, then stow it in the boot or garage afterwards. Same charging speed, same smart features model-for-model, different daily routine.

Tethered chargers: pros and cons

  • Pro — convenience. Plugging in takes ten seconds in the rain. If you charge most nights, this is the feature you will value most.
  • Pro — nothing to carry. The cable never needs to live in your boot (though it is worth keeping one there for public AC posts anyway).
  • Pro — harder to walk off with. The cable is permanently wired into the unit, so an opportunist cannot simply unplug it and leave.
  • Con — fixed length. Choose the length carefully at ordering; parking a second car or a visitor’s EV on the far side of the drive can leave you stretching.
  • Con — wear and tear. The cable lives outdoors year-round and takes daily flexing. If it is damaged, replacement is a manufacturer or electrician job rather than a shop purchase.
  • Con — kerb appeal. A wrapped cable on the wall looks busier than a clean socketed box.

Untethered chargers: pros and cons

  • Pro — tidy. Just a compact box on the wall — a common pick for front-of-house installations.
  • Pro — flexible. Swap cable lengths as your parking changes, and use the same cable at socketed public AC chargers.
  • Pro — future-proof and easy to fix. If the cable is damaged or a future car needs something different, you replace the cable, not the unit.
  • Con — the faff. Fetching, connecting and re-stowing a cable every night, in all weathers, gets old for daily chargers.
  • Con — cable cost. A decent 5m Type 2 cable is around £99, or about £120 for 7.5m, according to Top Charger’s 2026 cable guide (checked July 2026) — though many EVs come with one.
  • Con — a loose cable is stealable. Left plugged in but not charging, or draped over a wall, it is the easiest target of all — take it in.

Cable theft: how big a risk really?

Charging-cable theft is real but heavily skewed towards public infrastructure, where thieves target the copper. Forecourt Trader reported that thieves attacked 45 InstaVolt charging hubs across West and South Yorkshire in little over a year, stealing 258 cables that each yield a thief only £20–£25 in scrap copper — even though, as security firm Insight Security notes, a stolen cable can cost the operator around £1,000 to reinstate. At home the picture is calmer: while your car is actually charging, the connector locks at both ends on most setups, so the cable cannot simply be unplugged. The vulnerable moments are loose cables left out overnight and tethered cables draped invitingly over a wall.

  • Untethered: bring the cable indoors or lock it in the car/garage when not in use.
  • Tethered: loop the cable properly on its holster rather than leaving slack on the ground.
  • Either: a motion-sensing light or doorbell camera covering the driveway is a cheap deterrent.

Which should you choose?

If you charge most nights and value speed of plugging in, go tethered. If the unit is on the front of the house, you like a clean look, or you want the flexibility to change cable lengths and cars over the years, go untethered. The units themselves are usually priced within tens of pounds of each other. Factor in around £99 for a 5m Type 2 cable if your car did not come with one, and the totals are close to identical.

Can someone steal my cable while the car is charging?

On most setups, no — the connector locks at both the car and the chargepoint during a session. The realistic risk is a loose cable left out when not charging, so stow it away.

Do I still need my own cable with a tethered home charger?

For home use, no. But many public AC posts are socket-only, so it is worth keeping a Type 2 cable in the boot regardless — rapid DC chargers always have their own tethered cables.
