Window condensation every morning: what actually stops it, ranked by cost
Quick answer: Windows stream on autumn mornings because overnight air is loaded with moisture and the glass is the coldest surface in the room. Most homes fix it for under £50 with ventilation habits and a £44.99 window vac. If it keeps coming back, a 12-litre dehumidifier at around £170 to £180 does the job properly.
Every October the same thing happens. The heating goes on, the windows stay shut, and one morning you wake up to glass you could write your name in. It isn’t a fault with the windows. It’s physics, and you can beat it without spending much.
Why it happens in autumn specifically
Warm air holds more water than cold air. All evening your household pumps moisture into it: cooking, showers, breathing, the clothes airer in front of the radiator. Then the heating clicks off, the room cools overnight, and the air can’t hold what it’s carrying. It dumps the excess on the coldest surface it can find. That’s the glass.
Autumn is peak season because the outside temperature has dropped but most of us haven’t started ventilating for winter yet. The house is sealed up, the moisture has nowhere to go, and single-glazed or ageing double-glazed windows run cold enough to catch it all. We’ve covered the whole-house version of this problem in our guide to reducing condensation without living in a cold home. This piece is about the windows themselves.
The fixes, ranked by cost
| Cost | Fix | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| £0 | Ventilation habits | Cuts the moisture at source. Fixes mild cases outright |
| £0 | Towel wipe-down | Manages the symptom. Stops mould on seals and sills |
| £44.99 | Window vac | Faster, drier version of the towel |
| £170 to £180 | 12-litre dehumidifier | Removes the moisture overnight. Fixes stubborn cases |
| Quote needed | Extractor fans, trickle vents, PIV | Permanent ventilation. For homes where nothing else holds |
Free: change where the moisture goes
- Lids on pans, and run the extractor while cooking, plus ten minutes after.
- Bathroom door shut during and after showers, window cracked or fan running.
- Dry clothes in one room with the door shut and a window open, or outside while autumn still allows it. An airer in the living room is the single biggest condensation source in many homes.
- Crack bedroom windows to vent mode for ten minutes when you get up. A short sharp purge swaps the wet air for dry air without cooling the walls.
For a lot of houses, that list is the whole fix. Try it for a week before you buy anything.
Under £50: the window vac
A Kärcher WV 2 Plus costs £44.99 at Argos (checked July 2026). It sucks the water off the glass into a tank instead of pushing it around with a soggy towel. To be clear about what it is: management, not cure. The water still condensed, you’re just removing it before it pools on the sill and feeds mould. If wiping down is part of your morning anyway, it’s a decent upgrade. It won’t stop tomorrow’s condensation.
The little moisture-absorber tubs sold for a few pounds belong in a car or a wardrobe. They can’t keep up with a bedroom’s overnight moisture load, so don’t judge dehumidification by them.
Around £170: a proper dehumidifier
If habits alone don’t stop the streaming, a compressor dehumidifier will. Meaco’s Arete One 12L is the model we’d look at first: £179.99 direct from Meaco, and around £170 to £180 at major retailers (checked July 2026), with a 5-year warranty. Run it evenings or overnight on a landing or in the worst-affected room. We haven’t tested these units; this is based on published specifications, prices and warranty terms, checked July 2026.
Sizing matters more than brand, and the headline litres on the box are measured in tropical test conditions. Our guide to choosing the right dehumidifier size explains what the numbers really mean, and our dehumidifier running costs guide covers what it adds to the bill. Short version: a few pence an hour.
The permanent fixes
If every room streams every morning and wiping has become a winter ritual, the house has a ventilation problem, and hardware fixes it. Upgraded extractor fans with humidity sensors, trickle vents in window frames, or a positive input ventilation unit in the loft. PIV is the whole-house option and costs the least to run of the three. We’ve written up how PIV systems deal with condensation separately. These are quoted jobs, so get two or three prices.
One warning: insulation work can make window condensation worse for a while, because the house gets more airtight. If yours started after new windows, cavity wall or loft insulation, read our guide to condensation after insulation before buying anything.
When it’s a sign of something bigger
Condensation between the panes of a double-glazed unit is different. That means the seal has failed and the unit needs replacing; no dehumidifier will touch it. And black mould spreading on walls or ceilings, rather than window frames, points to a damp problem that needs diagnosing, not wiping.
But streaming glass on an October morning? Start with the free list, add a £170 dehumidifier if you must, and save the window vac money until you’ve decided whether wiping is still part of your routine.
FAQs
Should I sleep with the window open in autumn?
You don’t need to. A ten-minute purge when you wake does most of the work without losing heat all night. If a room suffers badly, leaving trickle vents open is a better compromise than an open window.
Does morning condensation mean I need new windows?
Not on its own. Condensation on the room-side of the glass is a moisture problem, not a window problem. Misting between the panes is the one that means the unit has failed.
Do moisture absorber tubs stop window condensation?
No. They pull a little water from a small enclosed space. A bedroom produces far more moisture overnight than a tub can absorb, which is why they work in cars and fail on windowsills.
