Granny Charging an EV: 3-Pin Plug Speeds, Safety Rules and When It Is Fine
Quick answer: A 3-pin “granny” charger delivers about 2.3kW — roughly 6–8 miles of range per hour — so a typical 60kWh EV takes 26 hours or more to charge from empty. It is fine for occasional overnight top-ups from a modern, well-wired socket, but never through an extension lead, and it is no substitute for a dedicated chargepoint if you drive daily.

What granny charging actually is
A granny charger is the portable charging cable supplied with many electric cars (or sold as an accessory). One end plugs into a standard BS 1363 three-pin household socket, the other into your car. A control box in the middle deliberately limits the current — usually to 10A, which works out at about 2.3kW on a UK 230V supply. Manufacturers often label it an “occasional use” cable, and that phrasing is deliberate: it exists for emergencies and top-ups, not as your main way of charging.
The nickname comes from the classic use case — plugging in on the driveway while visiting granny, somewhere you will never justify installing a wallbox.
Real speeds: what 2.3kW gets you
Charger installer Indra puts 3-pin charging at around 6–8 miles of range per hour, with a full charge of a larger battery taking 24 hours or more. Here is how that compares with a standard 7kW home wallbox, assuming a typical efficiency of about 3.5 miles per kilowatt-hour:

Two things stand out. First, the speed gap is enormous: an overnight eight-hour session on a granny charger adds roughly 18.4kWh — about 55–65 miles of range for around £4.80 — while a 7kW wallbox would fill most batteries completely in the same window. Second, the electricity cost is identical on the same tariff. A kWh is a kWh whichever plug it flows through; you pay for energy, not speed.
The cost catch: tariffs, not the plug
The real money difference is tariff access. The cheapest way to run an EV is an off-peak electricity tariff with a low overnight rate, and some of the “intelligent” tariffs that schedule your charging automatically expect a compatible smart chargepoint or car integration. Relying on a 3-pin plug can mean relying on your car’s own charge scheduling to hit the cheap window — workable, but clunkier. The safety rules
A domestic socket circuit was never designed to run near its maximum load for ten hours at a stretch, night after night. Heat is the enemy: old wiring, worn socket contacts and coiled cables all build it up. Indra’s guidance notes that dedicated chargepoints are installed to Section 722 of the IET Wiring Regulations — with their own circuit, RCD protection and earth-fault safeguards — none of which applies to a random kitchen socket. If you do granny charge, follow these rules:
- Plug straight into the wall socket — never into an extension lead, cable reel or multi-way adaptor. Coiled leads overheat under sustained load.
- Use a modern, well-fitted socket in good condition. Newer sockets built to BS 1363-2 are tested for sustained loads (some are even marked “EV” on the back plate). If a socket is loose, discoloured or warm to the touch, stop using it.
- Check the plug during your first few sessions. Slightly warm is normal; hot is a warning sign.

- Keep the connection dry and off the ground where possible, and never trail the cable through a pinched window or door.
- Follow your car maker’s instructions — some explicitly limit 3-pin charging to occasional use.
When granny charging is perfectly fine
- Plug-in hybrids. A PHEV battery is typically around 10–15kWh, so a granny charger fills it comfortably overnight in five to seven hours.
- Low-mileage drivers. If you drive 40–60 miles a week, one or two overnight sessions cover it.
- Emergencies and one-offs. Arriving somewhere with a flat battery and a socket is exactly what the cable is for.
- Visiting family or holiday lets — anywhere a wallbox will never exist.
- The gap before your wallbox is installed. A few weeks of careful 3-pin charging while you wait is reasonable.
When to get a wallbox instead

Is granny charging bad for my EV battery?
No — if anything, slow AC charging is gentle on the battery compared with rapid DC charging. The safety concern with 3-pin charging is your house wiring and socket, not the car.
Can I use an extension lead with a granny charger?
It is strongly discouraged. If it is genuinely unavoidable, use a single heavy-duty outdoor-rated lead designed for EV use, fully uncoiled, with RCD protection — and never daisy-chain leads or use a cable reel. Treat it as a stopgap, not a setup.
