GivEnergy Battery Review: What UK Homeowners Need to Know in 2026

GivEnergy batteries were, until this spring, one of the most popular choices for British homeowners pairing solar panels with storage. Competitive pricing, a 12-year warranty and a well-liked monitoring app made them an easy pick. That changed in April 2026.

Update (1 August 2026): GivEnergy Ltd entered administration on 9 April 2026 and has ceased trading. Christopher Brooksbank of CB Business Recovery was appointed administrator in the High Court in Leeds, and all 74 staff were made redundant (ESS News, 13 April 2026). Hardware warranties and support are no longer honoured by GivEnergy Ltd. Installed batteries keep working, and the app and cloud portal continue under a separate company, GivEnergy Software Ltd, which is not in administration. Treat cloud features as use while available. We don’t recommend buying a new GivEnergy unit. The rest of this review stands as a record of the product and a reference for existing owners.

Is the GivEnergy battery still worth buying?

No. The hardware was genuinely good value. The 9.5 kWh model cost £4,500 to £6,000 installed (VAT-free) and typically saved £500 to £750 a year by storing surplus solar for evening use. But GivEnergy Ltd ceased trading in April 2026 and the 12-year warranty is no longer honoured. If a new unit fails, nobody is obliged to fix it.

Remaining stock is being sold at a discount by some installers and wholesalers. Price that warranty risk in before you’re tempted: a £1,000 saving on a unit with no manufacturer behind it is not a saving if the battery management system dies in year three. We haven’t tested these units. This review is based on published specifications, prices and warranty terms, checked before and after the administration. It covers what the batteries were, what the administration means in practice, and what to do if you own one.

GivEnergy battery range and specifications

GivEnergy sold a modular battery system that let homeowners start small and expand later. The core products, as sold through UK installers up to April 2026:

All GivEnergy batteries use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry, which is safer and longer-lasting than the lithium-ion NMC cells found in some competitors. LFP cells typically last over 6,000 cycles before significant degradation. At one cycle per day that’s roughly 16 years of use, which matters more than ever now the paper warranty is worthless: the cells themselves should keep going.

The system caps at 17.5 kWh total capacity when stacking multiple battery modules. That was enough for most UK homes but well short of the Tesla Powerwall 3, which stacks up to 10 units for 135 kWh.

GivEnergy battery UK costs (as sold, to April 2026)

GivEnergy positioned itself as a value option in the UK battery market. Typical installed prices before the administration:

  • GivEnergy 5.2 kWh with hybrid inverter: approximately £3,500 to £4,500 installed
  • GivEnergy 9.5 kWh with hybrid inverter: approximately £4,500 to £5,500 installed
  • GivEnergy All-in-One 9.5 kWh: approximately £5,000 to £6,000 installed
  • Additional 2.6 kWh module (retrofit): approximately £900 to £1,200

These prices included the hybrid inverter, which handles both solar panel input and battery charging. Installed alongside solar panels, the whole system qualified for 0% VAT. On a per-kWh basis GivEnergy worked out at roughly £470 to £580 per kWh, competitive against most rivals. Any stock you see cheaper than this now is discounted for a reason: it comes with no manufacturer warranty.

The 12-year warranty, and why it no longer counts

GivEnergy’s 12-year warranty was the longest standard cover in the UK home battery market, two years ahead of the Tesla Powerwall 3. It promised at least 70% capacity retention after 12 years with no cycle limit, plus remote health checks at the 5, 8 and 10-year marks.

None of that survives the administration. A warranty is a promise from a company, and the company that made this one has ceased trading. GivEnergy Ltd no longer honours hardware warranties or provides support. The remote health checks required GivEnergy technicians, so those are gone too.

GivEnergy portal and smart features

The monitoring portal and app now run under GivEnergy Software Ltd, a separate company that is not in administration. They continue to work, but there’s no long-term commitment attached, so treat every cloud feature below as use while available:

  • Real-time energy flows: see exactly where your electricity is going at any moment
  • Historical data: daily, weekly, monthly and yearly generation and consumption graphs
  • Battery scheduling: set charge and discharge windows to match your tariff
  • Smart tariff integration: automatic optimisation for Octopus Flux, Agile and other time-of-use tariffs
  • EV charger integration: the GivEnergy EV charger can coordinate with the battery for solar-powered car charging

Remote firmware updates were also delivered over the portal. With no hardware company to write new firmware, expect the software you have now to be the software you keep.

What happened in April 2026

GivEnergy Ltd entered administration on 9 April 2026. Christopher Brooksbank of CB Business Recovery was appointed administrator in the High Court in Leeds. The practical upshot splits two ways. Installed hardware keeps working, because the battery is self-contained and doesn’t need the cloud for basic charging and discharging. The promises, though, are gone: warranties and manufacturer support are no longer honoured by GivEnergy Ltd.

If you already own a GivEnergy battery

Your battery will keep working. The hardware is self-contained, and basic charging and discharging don’t depend on GivEnergy’s cloud. Beyond that, three things are worth doing now:

  • Contact your installer first. They are your first line for faults, spares and servicing now the manufacturer is gone. Many installer workmanship warranties still stand.
  • Dig out your finance and payment paperwork. If you paid by credit card, or part-paid on one, you may have Section 75 cover against the failed warranty. Check finance agreements for similar protection.
  • Keep using the app, but don’t build plans around it. It runs under GivEnergy Software Ltd, a separate company still operating, so it’s use while available rather than guaranteed.

GivEnergy battery performance in UK conditions

Performance was never the problem. The batteries achieve a round-trip efficiency of approximately 95 to 96%: for every 10 kWh you put in, you get 9.5 to 9.6 kWh back out. That’s competitive with most rivals, though slightly below the Tesla Powerwall 3’s claimed 97.5%.

In a typical UK three-bed home with a 4 kWp solar panel system and a 9.5 kWh GivEnergy battery, published owner data points to:

  • Summer self-consumption: 80-95% of solar generation used on-site
  • Winter self-consumption: 40-60% depending on heating type
  • Annual bill reduction: 50 to 70%, typically around £600 to £900 per year
  • Payback period: typically 7 to 10 years for the battery element

A smart tariff like Octopus Flux could push annual savings above £1,000 through tariff arbitrage on top of solar self-consumption. Existing owners keep all of this. It’s only the safety net underneath it that’s gone.

How GivEnergy compared to rivals

GivEnergy won on price per kWh and, on paper, on warranty length. It lost to the Powerwall 3 on output power and total scalability, and the 3.6 kW continuous output was only ever adequate for evening loads, not whole-home backup. Can I still add more GivEnergy battery modules?

Physically the system supports expansion to 17.5 kWh, and 2.6 kWh modules cost around £900 to £1,200 installed while stock lasts. But any module you add now carries no manufacturer warranty, and supply will dry up. Talk to your installer before spending anything.

Is GivEnergy compatible with Octopus smart tariffs?

Yes. GivEnergy batteries work with Octopus Flux, Agile and Go tariffs. The portal lets you set charge windows to match cheap overnight rates and discharge during peak periods, and some owners use third-party platforms for automated optimisation. This depends on the cloud service staying up, so it’s use while available.

Does GivEnergy offer backup power during outages?

The standard system doesn’t include backup power during grid outages. The EPS (Emergency Power Supply) add-on enables backup for essential circuits, limited by the 3.6 kW output. With the company no longer trading, retrofitting EPS now depends entirely on installer stock and willingness.

Should I still buy a GivEnergy battery in 2026?
